Meet Alex MagenoPsychiatrist/MD, TMS

Dr. Alex Mageno is board-eligible general psychiatrist. He is comfortable working with all ages and stages of life with additional specialty training in child and adolescent psychiatry, nutritional psychiatry, and integrative mental health. He has joined Meadowbrook Counseling to help clients with medication-resistant anxiety, depression, and OCD to explore other effective and research-based treatments such as deep TMS. TMS therapy is a non-invasive and highly effective treatment that harnesses the power of magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. Individuals can access this transformative treatment for improved mental well-being through TMS therapy.

His personal approach to treatment is to first develop a deep understanding of the symptoms clients are experiencing, then examine how these symptoms impact their ability to experience health, wellness, and connectedness to others. He want to understand, as much as possible, the root cause of the depression, anxiety, insomnia, or whatever else his patients may experience.

Sierra Balfour earned her master’s degree in social work from Utah Valley University and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Liberty University, graduating magna cum laude. During her education she worked in a residential treatment center for female adolescents addressing complex trauma, neglect, and substance abuse. She also worked with a private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients using experiential therapy, with horses as part of her client sessions. Sierra came to Meadowbrook Counseling with over 10 years of experience in human service roles as an advocate for people with diagnosed disabilities, certified nursing assistant, childcare worker, and a self-defense instructor. Sierra has completed specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).

 

Sierra strives to create an environment where her clients feel safe and supported no matter what they are experiencing. She understands that life is hard, and that change can be scary. Her desire is to help people heal from past experiences, strengthen their relationships, challenge their thinking, discover their strengths, become empowered, and realize their potential. Sierra believes in the importance of self-compassion, self-acceptance, and inner peace. Sierra has worked with numerous clients with complex trauma, childhood sexual abuse, and relationship struggles. She has developed therapeutic skills that address childhood trauma, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, sexual abuse, women's issues, and life transitions.

Camping, fishing, and baking are among her favorite pastimes, though after savoring a bite of her baked creations, she tends to give them away — consuming too much sugar isn't her style! She cherishes her two beloved dogs and resides in Provo. Professionally, she is employed at Provo Canyon Behavioral Hospital as an adolescent therapist during daytime hours. Her background also includes a five-year tenure as a police officer at the Utah State Hospital. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Psychology from UVU in May 2015. She then pursued further studies at Touro Worldwide University and Northcentral University, earning two Master's degrees: one in Psychology in August 2017 and the other in Marriage and Family Therapy in October 2019.
